The Healers of Thedas: Orders, Traditions, and Legends of Dragon Age
One thing Dragon Age has never fully explored is that healing should not belong only to mages. Every culture, race, religion, military, and magical tradition in Thedas should have its own healers.

If Dragon Age expanded healing traditions this way, healing would become more than a few spells on a mage hotbar. It would become a major part of Thedas' cultures, religions, armies, and histories, creating memorable healer characters just as important as warriors, rogues, and mages.
Dragon Age Healers Expanded
If Dragon Age truly embraced the diversity of Thedas, there should be dozens of healing traditions, some respected, some feared, and some barely understood. Not all healing should be about restoring health. Some heal the body, others the mind, spirit, soul, memory, or even fate.
Tier VI: Elite Orders of Healers
The Silver Mantles
An independent order that travels throughout Thedas.
Motto:
"No wound is beneath our hands."
Known for:
- Treating anyone regardless of faction
- Crossing battlefields during ceasefires
- Establishing temporary hospitals
Members are protected by custom and tradition.
Even darkspawn hunters and mercenaries hesitate to harm them.
The Order of Sacred Mercy
A Chantry healing order.
Responsibilities:
- Treating plague victims
- Caring for orphans
- Operating healing sanctuaries
- Supporting templars and pilgrims
Many become local heroes.
Some villages survive solely because these healers arrive during difficult winters.
The Emerald Covenant
An ancient Dalish healing society.
Specializes in:
- Nature restoration
- Animal healing
- Spirit healing
- Ancient elven medicine
Members can supposedly hear the suffering of forests.
Psychological Healers
One of Dragon Age's biggest missing opportunities is mental healing.
Thedas is filled with:
- War veterans
- Former slaves
- Survivors of Blights
- Victims of demons
- People traumatized by magic
Yet very few specialists exist to help them.
Mindwardens
Experts in psychological healing.
Abilities:
- Trauma recovery
- Emotional stabilization
- Memory reconstruction
- Nightmare treatment
They often work alongside mages and priests.
Dream Shepherds
Rare Fade specialists.
They enter dreams voluntarily.
Abilities:
- Guide victims through nightmares
- Remove dream parasites
- Repair damaged memories
- Help tranquilized minds recover
Many consider them dangerously close to forbidden magic.
Battlefield Healers
Shield Healers
Warrior-healers trained to protect and heal simultaneously.
Equipment:
- Massive shields
- Medical kits
- Defensive enchantments
Abilities:
- Rescue wounded soldiers
- Create safe zones
- Carry injured allies from battle
Many armies would treasure such individuals.
Banner Healers
Specialists attached to military banners.
Abilities:
- Rally morale
- Enhance recovery
- Remove fear
- Strengthen formations
Their presence alone inspires soldiers.
Rogue-Based Healers
Healing should not belong exclusively to mages.
Apothecaries
Masters of chemistry and medicine.
Abilities:
- Advanced potions
- Antidotes
- Combat stimulants
- Sedatives
Many rogues would naturally pursue this path.
Anatomists
Experts in understanding the body.
Abilities:
- Diagnose injuries instantly
- Treat internal wounds
- Identify diseases
- Counter poisons
Assassins often fear these specialists because they recognize subtle toxins.
Mercy Knives
A controversial group.
They understand exactly how to:
- Save lives
- End suffering
- Perform difficult surgeries
Their skills blur the line between healer and executioner.
Dwarven Healing Orders
Dwarves deserve far more unique medical traditions.
Stonewright Healers
Masters of body restoration.

Ancient elves may have worked closely with such spirits.

Many scholars doubt they ever existed.
Others insist they appear only during the darkest ages of history.
Unique Healers of Legend
Every Dragon Age game should contain at least one healer whose abilities are unlike anyone else's.
Examples:
The Blind Mother
Cannot see physically.
Can see wounds on the soul.
The White Raven
An Antivan healer-assassin.
Can heal almost any injury.
Can also stop a heart with a single touch.
The Last Spirit Healer
A mysterious traveler accompanied by invisible spirits.
Nobody knows their age.
Stories place them in events separated by centuries.
The Keeper of Names
An ancient elf.
Claims every person possesses a true name.
Knowing it allows them to:
- Heal
- Protect
- Strengthen
- Purify
Or destroy.
A richer healing system would make Dragon Age feel much more alive. Warriors would have battlefield medics, rogues would have alchemists and surgeons, mages would have multiple healing schools, dwarves would have stonecraft medicine, and every culture in Thedas would approach healing differently. Instead of "the healer mage," Dragon Age could have dozens of memorable healer archetypes, each with their own stories, philosophies, powers, and place in the world.
